That evening, Dan e-mailed and asked me to call him. “I want to talk to you because I feel you weren’t taking me seriously or really listening to me today,” he said. He was calmer and sounded more like himself. “I want to go back to school more than anything, but I know if I do, I’ll go back to ritualizing and I absolutely don’t want that. I still do some now, but it’s so much better than before. The stress of school would be too much for me. I’m not saying that to be negative. I’m just being realistic. As much as I want to go back, it’s not worth the toll it’d take on my health. And I hate to even think about it or say it, but I’d probably start cutting myself again. I know I’ll have to live with you, and I’m okay with that.”

“I’m so glad we talked, Dan,” I said. “I want to hear more of what you’re thinking.”

“My anxiety levels are as high now as they were last semester because I’m doing so much less ritualizing,” he said. “I can barely walk from point A to point B without having a panic attack. What I really want to do is put all my efforts into therapy. I know I can’t do that and schoolwork. If I go back to school I won’t have time to concentrate on my OCD.”
